Being an Immigrant Gardener

ElNuevoSol · Being an Immigrant Gardener

“When we are having jardineros out there sweating and busting their butt. It sorts of an uncontrollable truth of inequality in our society, and I think that it’s hard for Americans to confront. It questions certain myths about American democracy and inequality, says Pierrette Hondagneu Sotelo a sociology professor at USC.

This audio piece talks about my father who has been a jardinero for 21 years, and despite all the challenges he had to overcome as an immigrant he now has his own business. Jardineros are working men who work daily to keep residential gardens neat and clean in Los Angeles. This type of labor is extremely strenuous. Working as a jardinero these men face many injustices from having clients that don’t pay to lacking adequate access to health care. The labor of jardineros has become invisible. Many people don’t see the hard work that is put in to make lawns look perfectly beautiful. So, remember when you see a jardinero is someone just like you working hard to create a better life for themselves and their family.
