Vivian Rayos: Hola y Bienvenidos a Radio Nepantla, un pódcast de El Nuevo Sol, el sitio multimedia del programa de periodismo en español de la Universidad del Estado de California en Northridge.
Mi nombre es Vivian Rayos.
El nombre de nuestro pódcast nació de la palabra Nepantla que viene del idioma Náhuatl y significa estar en medio. Los indígenas de México usaban esta palabra para hablar de estar entre una cultura dominante y su cultura de origen. El movimiento chicano hizo de este espacio uno de resistencia cultural que trasciende dos culturas y muchas fronteras.
En esta serie titulada “Latinas en la Música”, presentaremos historias de la participación de las mujeres latinas en la música.
En este episodio hablaremos con Génesis Lorenzo Castillo, cantante de flamenco del grupo The Flamenco Souls. Con solamente veintidós años, Génesis canta con una voz muy madura. Cantar flamenco es algo nuevo para Génesis — ella dice que es una nueva exploración. No es común de escuchar de una chica joven y chicana como Génesis del este de Los Ángeles que canta música Flamenca.
La música flamenca viene del sur de España, donde nació en las comunidades de gitanos en Andalucía y Murcia. Hay tres categorías en flamenco. El cante jondo — que es un canto profundo. El canto intermedio o canto flamenco, que incorpora otros estilos de música española y es una música híbrida. Y el cante chico, que tiene un ritmo más simple y no toma tanta emoción como un canto profundo.
Antes de sumergirse en la carrera musical de Génesis, ella nos cuenta sobre su niñez y de dónde creció en Los Ángeles.
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: Yo crecí en Glendale, Los Ángeles California pero mis padres son de un lugar que se llama Tlalchapa, Guerrero en México. Creciendo aquí en los estados unidos cuando mis padres nacieron en México era como un battle. Yo tuve un battle, como todo mi vida identificando me con algo en especifico siempre explore lo que mis opciones eran porque aquí en los estados unidos siempre mis padres me dijeron que tengo muchos oportunidades que you know it’s good to explore my opportunities aquí. So creciendo aquí era yo know con lo que está pasando ahorita en el mundo en los pasados veinte años que yo ha vivido veinte dos años, ha estado como a battle. It’s been a real battle trying to identify myself with one or the other really so it’s nice to just find music la música flamenco también con flamenco stylings que me ha ayudado a estar más cerca a mis rutas y dónde vengo you know Latin, Spanish, Hispanics, whatever you choose to call it like the people, the blood, the style, el sabor.
Vivian Rayos: Hoy en día, hay muchas maneras de identificarnos y es algo muy complejo. Podemos ser latinas, hispanas y específicamente mexicanas o mexicoamericanas. O tal vez tener más conciencia política y ser chicanas, chicanx o latinx. Los tiempos cambian y Génesis habla de cómo ella se identifica y cómo empezó a cantar.
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: Yo me identifico con, pues de verdad no me gusta identificarme con algo porque siempre todo está cambiando como las palabras cuando la gente descubre diferentes maneras de expresarnos. Yo miro que yo tengo más similares o estoy más similar a la gente de Chicano culture porque mis padres son de México y yo ha estado viviendo aquí en los estados unidos. It’s like somewhere in between where I can you know like just everything from our childhood to the struggles that we face in our adulthood, it’s really similar so I identify I guess I could say Chicano to answer your question, Chicana.
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: Mi Madre siempre dijo que yo ha cantando desde cuando estuve una bebe. Nunca me pude callar yo estado cantando sola desde mi nacimiento puedo decir yo know just like la voz ha estado usando yo estado usando mi voz y practicando cómo usar lo como me oigo a mi so y a la gente también you know analyzing my reflection on the people that hear me it’s helpful to also teach myself I can say that la gente y yo, we all sort of like created this voice that I’m speaking in right now. [Laughs] In a way.
Vivian Rayos: Dicen que la música que creces escuchando da forma a la persona que eres hoy. Genesis nos cuenta sobre la música que escucha como el jazz latino y el nombre sobre su grupo.
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: Ahorita estoy escuchando mucho latin jazz like salsa and stuff. Con la banda que estoy haciendo la música con ellos, they play a lot of latin jazz and salsa and boleros and all this Spanish stuff and they’re expanding to different cultures and that’s what The Flamenco Souls are all about. That’s the name of the group.
Vivian Rayos: A Génesis le cuesta trabajo expresar en español su pasión por el flamenco, pero en inglés, ella nos transmite su emoción sobre los ritmos, precisión, y agresividad que es parte de la cultura flamenca.
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: The preciseness of it I don’t know how to say this in Spanish but the preciseness of it like the rhythm and the polyrhythms and the aggressiveness it can be played with at times. The extreme emotion es muy spiritual what really draws me to flamenco is the stylings also because its very specific to one person’s experience and it’s like getting more into it, veo que a la gente que le gusta o involucrada en flamenco, es vida para ellos so I would love to explore that and get into it. It seems very flavorful and deep and like hella Spanish it’s really great I love that [laughs].
Vivian Rayos: Conocer a un grupo de flamenco en el medio de Los Ángeles con intérpretes chicanos no es algo típico. Génesis cuenta cómo conoció a su grupo y como es la esencia de Los Ángeles para la música flamenca.
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: Yo conocí mi grupo cuando uno de mis amigos que se llama Ludwig, yo trabajo con él en la música, me ha ayudado con mucho me introdujo a David Holguín que es una guitarrista y él está jugando por todos lados ahorita y le gusta hablar a la gente, el traiga la gente con el y juegan la muisca, they play music together and yo so una de las personas que ha, played with him, that we’ve like played shows together.
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: Ha hablado con David Holguín sobre esto hay muchas scenes que están pasando ahorita. Nosotros no vemos el flamenco mucho tanto como lets say like hip-hop or something. Pero eso me gusta del flamenco también que es you know no es de los estados unidos nosotros lo traemos a los estados unidos so es algo que any person can really do they can get into any type of music and just bring it here or anything pero it’s not very common I could say.
Vivian Rayos: La música flamenca es emoción pura. Hablé con Génesis sobre cómo ella usa su emoción para cantar y también hablamos sobre que le hace sonreír en la vida.
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: Uff, cuando estoy cantando la canciones en español, por una razón yo puedo ver que las palabras que usan en español son muy apasionante y con eso cuando no más práctico hablando en español, o cantando en español, usando esos palabras que tienen mas, mas meaning like in some way there like more specific like some words in Spanish I can say that will have a totally different effect on a person than if I were to say it in English. So like when I sing songs in Spanish, that just really gets me in like this like you know headspace and heartspace where I can express that kind of thing.
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: The most beautiful thing that i’ve ever seen on earth is another person. Lo que me hace sonreír es la expresión de la gente. Si es malo o bueno es algo que la gente expresa y es divino. Es algo que nosotros hacemos por una manera para entender nos y there’s no wrong way to do anything like to live life its just to be lived and that’s what makes me smile, life {laughs}
Vivian Rayos: Génesis trabaja con un grupo de dieciséis personas y hay más muchachos que muchachas en el grupo. Quería saber cómo es él dinámica del grupo y su experiencia con trabajar con muchos hombres. Hablé con Genesis sobre el tema.
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: Somos como diez y seis muchas que están en esta banda son hombres y son hombres que tienen más experiencia que yo. En la música porque están en el colegio or han you know they’ve been performing with a bunch of other artists pero mi experiencia estando con esta gente y con tantos hombres it brings me to be secure and confident with my body and who I am because I’m going to be specific with clothing, like wardrobe. Ha estado en una banda con hombres you know my mom started buying me a bunch of dresses and heels and stuff and that’s cute like I love that stuff it’s so beautiful, but at like some point It got cold and I wanted to wear pants and I would say I’m a pretty fluid individual when it comes to clothing. I’ll wear pants and I’ll like to wear a suit and stuff and it’ll be just as great to perform in. It’s just about having a good time and I think the gender doesn’t really affect me too much es lo que sentimos cuando estamos juntos. It’s like whether we were feeling each other that day or not it just allows me to look past several layers of the being and person just so I could play a decent song with them. I guess I could say that’s just what it is for now until we find more female singers
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: La realidad es que mucha gente abusa de otra gente y I can’t hide from that fact, so truly what I look to establish myself as when it comes to doing music is someone who’s just not seen as a woman but someone who’s seen for her accomplishments and things that she’s overcome. I wish for that not to be like too huge of a factor when it comes to working in music, with so many men in the industry and such. I wish to just possibly connect with more female workers in the music industry, I would really love to do that. Sexual harassment, man es algo muy serio that we all have to struggle and deal with but if there is a way I could find to, not detach myself from that but to just proclaim my space, reclaim my space, where I am whether that’s being vocal, or putting facts down, or bringing my people with me, that’s just what I’m going to have to do until that changes. I really wish to see it change soon. I would not like to see sexual harassment be something that people deal with all the time, I hope we could all reclaim our power but its a serious thing to talk about and hopefully as a population we can come together and somehow figure out a way to express ourselves in a healthier way because that’s just not the way.
Vivian Rayos: Tocar en un bar a veces puede ser peligroso. Cuando Génesis toca con su grupo hay veces que sí se pone un vestido y tacones. Le pregunté si se pone nerviosa cuando hay hombres tomando y mirándola cuando canta porque es muy fácil sexualizar a una mujer.
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: You know, probably at some point, yo tuve insecurity, inseguridad estando enfrente te tanto gente que let’s say están borrachos y you know they probably don’t have that much self control at the time. I can’t say I get scared because I work alongside a lot of people who express themselves sexually and that could be through dance, through singing, through their art, whatever that may be. I feel like together with them there’s more strength than me just standing alone porque yo sola I would feel so vulnerable but also possibly tap into some strength. Which is I think what I do when I do perform you know like yeah it’s like it can get very sexy sometimes but at the very end of it I just feel like whatever comes out is what I’m feeling and I feel that’s what mostly flamenco can be. I’ve actually heard a couple songs by Flamenco artists that are more about like childhood trauma or childhood things that are going on. That’s another way I would like to express myself, not just like the sexy. I don’t feel like sex is everything and that’s the only way to like express myself even being a woman and being sexualized always. There’s a lot more ways that we can express ourselves as women and I choose to seek that. I want to seek you know different forms of expression. Some of it can be aggressive. I can be like very like I could tap into aggressiveness in my performances and that’s where I think the flamenco suits me a little bit better because despues alli estan como con sus tacones you know Cha Cha Cha and it’s like dang you could kill someone with that heel [laughs]. Yeah so I see it as like power but also if you allow it to be weakness.
Vivian Rayos: Génesis dice que la parte favorita de ser cantante es descurbir su voz.
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: Mi parte favorita de ser cantante es descubriendo que mi voz es unique which gives me the space to appreciate all the other people that are not my voice so like literally anyone that has a voice the more I learn to love mine I learn to appreciate other peoples and what it takes for them to express themselves because that’s just my way of expressing myself, cantando, la expresión.
Vivian Rayos: En este corte de sonido vamos a escuchar a Génesis cantando con su grupo The Flamenco Souls en un bar en Los Ángeles. Génesis tiene un vestido rojo y tacones rojos, y una flor blanca en su pelo. Ella es claramente el centro de atención.

Vivian Rayos: Aunque el futuro es incierto para la mayoría de nosotros, Génesis habla sobre qué futuro ella ve con The Flamenco souls y nos cuenta dónde en Los Ángeles toca el grupo.
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: Oof um la futuro que veo con los Flamenco Souls es queremos ir a, por todo el mundo nosotros juntos. Whether it’s the same group that we started off with or people that we meet in another country, were going to be playing music. We’re going to be playing the classics like the cultural classics from all different types of cultures because no he no mas de flamenco, en el grupo. The guitarist and one of the band leaders like to inform people that flamenco comes from a harvester. It’s a word that means one who harvests food for a community. So we like to extend that to not just the Spanish community or the Latino community but like Polish communities and the Asian community and so many other communities that are in the united states but also just come from all over the world. Yo veo un futuro grande que estamos hacemos música con gente por todos lados es una de mis dreams mis suenos to feel people all over the world through music and art.
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: En Los Ángeles estamos tocando en East Los Angeles at Rudy’s every Wednesday we have Pasadena Gastro pub at every last Friday of the month. Tambien tenemos El Cid about once a month. So many shows and if you want to keep up I’d say to follow David Holguín on instagram @holgitano he posts all of the flyers and stuff I’m usually there but I like that band because if I can’t make it there will be another vocalist. Hay gente que viene para oír la guitarrista que juega flamenco styling’s de todos tipos de música. Y cuando oyen música que ellos han oyendo creciendo se, ellos se ponen como wow they’re like amazed at David’s capability of playing flamenco and when I accompany him or the band it feels like a lot fuller sound and we all bring our things to the sound and the table i think people when they see that, it kind of like moves them, it opens up this vision that they get to see where a lot of people working together can make such a big beautiful, spiritual, sound. I’m really glad they get to be a part of it, participate, dance with us, and sing along with us and laugh with us and cry with us. Music is so beautiful and emotional and spiritual.
Vivian Rayos: Ser chicana cantando música flamenca de España en Los Ángeles puede ser intimidante. Génesis dice que le da un poco de miedo porque hay mucha gente que ella respeta y que tienen mucha experiencia en flamenco.
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: That’s obviously like a very… that’s something that people study like 10-20 years for. I’m barely out here just admiring it for what it is and i’m starting to like express myself in this way, pero es algo que me hace sentir conectada con mi gente también. That’s something that I want to do because living in the United States in Los Ángeles hay gente de todo el mundo so ensenándoles quien soy yo por la música de donde, que viene de España or other places even in the world that I could bring music from it’s kind of scary because I just respect people so much. All I really want is just to bring some type of connection when we’re so lost you know out here, and like the different mixes and stuff like you can pick a little bit of everything and stuff but I don’t think you could ever really deny your roots as far as they expand. I’m really honestly honored to be even involved in any type of Flamenco styling or band of this sort. I’m really just excited to see how it unfolds for me.
Vivian Rayos: Nuestra serie es sobre mujeres. Génesis me dice que es lo más bonito de ser mujer y ser el portal de la vida.
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: Nosotros somos, we are the portal to life. We bring life on this earth and algo bonito de ser mujer es la habilidad de tener un conexión con el divino y traerlo al mundo. I feel like women can be very intuitive but I feel like anyone can really tap into that kind of energy. I think it’s just algo que alguien, something that someone can connect with you know the divine feminine.
Vivian Rayos: Yo quería saber qué consejo Génesis le daría a una mujer o una chica para ser exitosa en la música y también saber a dónde se ve su carrera en diez años
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: Consejos para dar a la mujer con música es no estar con miedo. No hay razón para estar en miedo ósea cuando viene la música como mi abuelita me dijo, mi abuelita Chela me dijo, ‘Hija si lo vas a hacer hágalo y hágalo muy bien porque si no alguien más lo puede hacer’ [laughs] so wherever you are do it, just do it, whoever you are do it and just get it done and see how that works out for you and go from there. Just keep stepping the stones that you place in front of yourself. That’s what I’m trying to do right now at least.
Génesis Lorenzo Castillo: Yo veo mi carrera en música, hopefully estoy con la gente que yo amo y me ama y con una comunidad que crecemos juntos wheather that’s a big festival, maybe that we could produce ourselves I see no limits truly that could connect to other fields like movies, film, cooking even, vamos a ver donde estamos en diez anos but 10 years from now I just would love to still be making sounds with people that I love and hearing their sounds too.
