Live video for mobile from UstreamThe Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, and Communication, the Office of Graduate Studies Distinguished Visiting Speakers Program, the Department of Journalism, the Department of Chicana/o Studies, and the Oviatt Library invite you to a presentation by the award-winning journalist Charles Bowden and his collaborator, librarian Molly Molloy, the creator of Frontera List, the most comprehensive compendium of news and intelligence on the border region. They will talk about Ciudad Juárez and the killing fields produced by Nafta, drugs, greed, and corruption on both sides of the border.

Based on Molly Molloy’s figures, almost 10,000 people have been killed in Ciudad Juárez since 2008, turning this border city into the most violent place in the planet. Charles Bowden’s book Murder City: Ciudad Juárez and the Global Economy’s New Killing Fileds chronicles a year of violence in Juárez through the eyes of a veteran reporter on the war for drugs, a Mexican reporter escaping Mexico’s military and seeking asylum in the U.S., a sicario, or hit man, running for his life, and a beauty queen gone mad after being ganged-raped.
