El Día de los Muertos crossed borders and cultures in the Hollywood Forever Cementery

On Oct. 22, Hollywood Forever Cemetery hosted a large festival for all ages and cultures to come and join together and celebrate Dia de los Muertos, or “Day of the Dead.”

Dia de los Muertos stems from an Aztec tradition, who believed that the souls of deceased family members come home for the evening. This celebration has been brought over to America and is now celebrated among the community.

The cemetery transforms into the “land of the dead,” with decorated altars, containing pictures of the deceased family member. The altars feature incense, the traditional Day of The Dead sugar skulls, pan dulce, flowers along with some of the deceased’s favorite items.

The event also featured multicultural performances relating to the afterlife, including an Indian band, Buddhist performers, and Brazilian dancers. There were many booths where artwork, clothing and jewelry were sold. At one booth, attendees could even receive the traditional Day of the Dead skull face paint.

Although the celebration is considered a “Mexican” Holiday, all different cultures from gathered at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery to celebrate a day dedicated to the dead.
